Colours, for Spring? Groundbreaking....

What is this I see? Birds, sunshine, and flowers?! It must mean its spring! After the long and harsh winter season has finally come to an end, it is now time to swap those big boots for cute strappy ones and trade in that puffy jacket with floral sets! If you’re changing your attire why not change your hair, too? What do you think of when the word “spring” comes to mind? Freshness, energy, colours? Perhaps all the above? My biggest thing is colour! I want it all. I want colours outside, on my clothes, new shades of lipstick, and of course, my hair. For me, and I can only speak for myself, but when warm weather returns and I am more out and about, I want a change in my colour. So, let’s talk about it! Here are some ideas for adding hair colour for the spring season!

You may be thinking that dyeing your hair is not for you. It’s just so permanent. Well, this worry is a thing of the past because temporary colour wax has graced us with its existence. To add, these temporary waxes are now carried by some well-known curly hair brands. What I love about this idea is that it’s a great way to test out different colours without the fear of not loving the finished look. So, if you don’t like it, no problem! You can use it as a highlight, full coverage, or try different colours at once. You can even mix colours and create your signature look. Use those creative juices that I believe you have! When you’re done, you can simply wash it out. Several brands now provide temporary colour wax such as As I Am – Curl Color, ORS Curls Unleashed – Color Blast Temporary Hair Makeup Wax, and Hair Paint Wax. Before you try it out, though, I’d recommend reading the instructions first and testing on a smaller section of hair. You know, just in case.

Now, onto the more permanent option. The hair dyes. First things first, find a good colourist. I can’t stress this enough. Curly hair always has and always will have special requests, each curl is a diva in its own way after all. Whether your hair has never been coloured or is currently colour-treated, it is important to find someone who knows how these chemicals work on hair. When you change the colour on a more “permanent” level there are many things to consider. You’ve got semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and of course, permanent. Chances are, bleach will also be involved. Whatever method you take, know that your hair will go into a little bit of a shock. Remember, listen to your hair it will always tell you and since the dye will dry it out it’s important to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! So, like you would any other time, don’t forget to deep condition. After all, you are adding chemicals to those beautiful strands and will need to give some extra love once you are out of the salon chair. Find products (like shampoos and conditioners) that are meant to be used on colour-treated hair. There are several different products so find what works for you or ask the stylist what they would recommend.

Now that the sun is shining and the new colour is set, go out there and rock it! Embrace that shade, highlight, lowlight, and all the other “lights” in between because it is “You” season! Remember, just have fun with it and be unapologetically authentic to yourself!

Love always, your forever curl friend Frecklez_n_Curlz.
