Hot Curl Summer

Hot Curl Summer

Where is my summer curly girls?! Summer is finally here which means cute dresses, outdoor activities, sunlight, and of course, heat. If you’re anything like me, I can bet your hair gets hot when you are out and about. When you mix curls with the sun it seems like all that is underneath is immersed in a sauna. This means your neck, scalp, and probably your face needs some cooling off. So, with the heat this season, what are some things that you can do to cool yourself off with those hot curls?! Here are some ideas for your “hot curl summer.”

There are days that I don’t want to wear my hair down because the overpowering heat underneath my curls on my neck is just way too much. So, what can be done without creating more tension and frizz when wearing your hair up? Well, satin scrunchies, of course! These aren’t ordinary scrunchies, these are the fancy kind. They are cute and stylish but also practical as they won’t create frizz and tangles in your hair. Another bonus is that they will limit breakage. In addition, there are plenty of styles you can do with scrunchies. High ponytail, top bun, space buns, and the tried-and-true pineapple. The options are endless! You will look cute (no surprises here) while also giving yourself relief from the heat by wearing your hair up. There are many places you can get satin scrunchies, but I would highly recommend supporting our very own Curly Prints! Head over to www.curlyprints.ca for an assortment of satin scrunchies. I know I will!

Another hair tip for the summer is something I’ve mentioned before, which is deep condition. Whether you live in high or low humid areas, with the added heat, there can be added dryness. Curly hair is already prone to dryness; therefore, it needs more help to lock in moisture. I’m very much a “once a week” deep condition gal (Sunday wash-and-go here I come!) but it would be helpful to increase to 2 a week if that is what your hair needs. Again, listen to your hair as it will always tell you what it needs. When it comes to deep conditioners, there are so many options and can be overwhelming to choose from. You can find options at your local beauty supply store and Sephora. You can also create your deep conditioners, which you can research online. Find what works best for your hair type and how it responds to the summer months. For me, I like something very thick because where I live, it is extremely dry with little humidity, so I need some strength in my deep conditioners!

Lastly, if you like to wear hats, I recommend satin lined. It seems that there are fewer options for summer hats that are satin-lined, but it isn’t impossible. What I’ve noted are satin-lined baseball caps if that is something you like to wear. Throw your hair in a ponytail (with a satin scrunchie, of course) and throw on that cap. Not only will your eyes be protected, but you won’t have to worry about frizz, yet again. The only thing you may worry about is how your hair will maintain the shape of the cap when you take it off. Alas, you can’t always win but it is a potential solution.

I hope this season brings you joy, laughter, and of course, hot curls. As always, much love. Your forever curl friend, Frecklez_n_curlz.
