My Fall Haircare Routine
Share
There is something very pretty about the fall season, the colors, the crunchy leaves, and the quaint sunsets. Like many of us, our hair changes with each and every season and behaves differently than the previous one. Here are some things that I do differently during the fall months, or in my case, a few Fall weeks.
I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Deep condition and maintain moisture. Yes, we should deep condition always but with the dryer times ahead and colder winds, it is important to increase the amount of times you deep condition. Personally, I opt for something with a thicker consistency and cover each strand with a hefty layer of “the good stuff” while also applying it on very wet hair. Now, it is considered a “no-no” to leave the deep conditioner on all night under a shower cap, but I tend to break the rules every now and then. As a precaution, always check what the bottle recommends for “marinating” time. The second thing I mentioned, was maintaining moisture. I have continued to refresh my curls with a mixture of conditioner or leave-in conditioner and water in a spray bottle. This not only gives my curls a wake-up for the day but also a nice drink for those thirsty curls.
Beware of the scarf! This is something I had not considered early on in my natural hair journey and is very eye-opening now. If your scarf is touching your hair, well, you will get frizz on those ends. While I may not be flailing my head around while walking about, the simple movement of walking while wearing a scarf will rub your ends and inevitably create friction and frizz. I have yet to see scarves with satin liners, and maybe they are out there, but this is something that would impact the integrity of the curl if you are wearing it down.
Another thing that I do is use heavier leave-ins and gels as opposed to hotter months where I use lighter options. I need a little more resistance when it comes to harsher weather so heavier gels are my best friend at that time. I am still a big fan of the L.O.C (leave-in, oil, gel) method but will just change the products that I use. Again, I will always give my hair a good spritz with my makeshift spray every day after I’ve completed my full routine.
If added deep conditioning, moisture, and extra precautions for accessories seem like a lot, which is and can be overwhelming, I’d opt for protective styles. Box braids it is! Or whatever style of your choice, of course. I prefer box braids and it is just one less thing to worry about while also looking fabulous. There are also so many different styles you can create with braids! So have fun with it!
Those are just a few tips for you that I do when Summer ends and Fall begins. At the end of the day, it is always about moisture, moisture, moisture!
As always, much love. Your forever curl friend, Frecklez_n_curlz.
