Secrets of the Curly Haired Sisterhood

Secret secrets are no fun, secret secrets hurt someone. Or do they? In this case, this “tell-all” is about some of my curly girl secrets! Every curly girl has their little secret or “formula” on how they get their perfect wash-and-go or curly look. I have asked myself while scrolling, how that person has the perfect look or hairstyle and am always so curious how they achieve it! I don’t know about them but I can tell you that they didn’t figure it out overnight. Finding out what works specifically for your curls and curl patterns can take time. Take it from me. Well, I’m here to share with you a few of my little not-so-secret secrets.
What is it that most, if not all, curlies want? Definition. There are several methods for achieving defined curls and I would say I have done most…I think. However, my new “secret” is that I have recently switched from air-drying and blow-drying to using a hooded dryer. When I say this is a game changer, I mean it! Here’s why I love it so much. Firstly, I have saved 4-5 business days no longer drying my hair the old-fashioned way. Secondly, I don’t have to hold my head upside down and make myself a little light-headed. The downside is my arms are not as toned from holding a blow-dryer for what seems like an eternity. If you know, you know. Why did I decide to make the switch? To save time, really. This has significantly changed up my wash-and-go because I’ve noticed for my hair that it reduces frizz and results in my curls poppin’! What I will tell you is I should get some clips to elevate my roots because I find I need to fluff them up, specifically in the front, after I’ve finished. Either way, when I am done with the hooded dryer I just scrunch it out and I am on my way! Another bonus, there are more things you can do than just a wash-and-go. Throw in those flexi-rods, twirl in those curling sets, and take a seat under the dryer. While you’re down there, you might as well catch up on things. Watch your favourite show, eat some snacks, return some messages, whatever suits you! There are many different types but I decided to go for the “GOLD N HOT ELITE 1875-Watt Professional Stand Bonnet Dryer” from Amazon.
Now, for those pesky broken edges. These are currently the bane of my existence! I’ve been encountering some breakage from the good ol’ bun and have found that they love to do their own thing when styling. However, I don’t want to keep slicking them back as that is another cause for the breakage. So what do I do? I blend them in with my longer strands by twisting. My main area of breakage is at my temples, which I assume is a hot spot for many. After I’ve finished twisting, I simply tuck them behind my ears for safe keeping and nobody can tell! Yes, I still gel them to get a cute twist-out later just in case I wish to take them out, but that is not my norm. I try to be as gentle as possible on those already fragile strands of hair while also hiding them away as they tend to puff up if I don’t do twists. I hope that by leaving them in a softer protective style they will be less prone to breakage, and I will likely leave them alone.
Well, there you have it! Some of my secrets for how I do my hair on the regular. Pass it on…
As always, much love.
